Meet ILEA Chicago Member - Amanda Boyer

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

Who/ what inspired you to go into event planning?

The events industry found me like so many others. I spent over decade at AVIXA which is the trade association that represents the pro-audiovisual industry. In my various roles there I planned or oversaw events for the industry. I love the thrill of live and making visions into reality.

Tell us one thing we might not learn about you right away?

I have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in different capacities for over a decade. I love the organization and have learned so much from building homes to lasting relationships. It has also turned into a passion for doing home projects at my house and has given me the confidence to take on those projects.

What do you love the most about what you do?

I LOVE our team and the people I get to work with. I also love that my work doesn’t feel like work, I get to challenge myself every day and every day is a new adventure.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Clifton, VA which is just outside of Washington, DC. My extended family is all from various parts of Pennsylvania, so I spent a lot of my childhood there and consider it a second home.

What's your event gone wrong horror story?

We have all been there, audio or video issues, speakers being late, stressed host. I think it is how we react as professionals. I remember an event where we blew a fuse, all of our outdoor lighting, and audio was out and I was about to open the doors to guest. Quick reactions of keeping the happy hour going until we could get the power reset helped keep the guest happy but there were sponsors for the main event that also need to be communicated to. We all have horror stories but the better story is how we react in the moment to make the best of the situation.

What made you interested in participating in ILEA?

I want to be part of a community of peers who get what we do and why we do it. I love learning from others and hope I am able to contribute to others!
