Meet ILEA Chicago Member - Brandon Bierlein of Drury Lane Events

Who/what inspired you to go into event planning?
I spent about six years as a freelance theatre producer, actor, and director before moving into events. I have always been inspired by individuals and relationships, and I thrive working on a team of varied perspectives and backgrounds.
Also, I watched the movie My Best Friend’s Wedding so much growing up that I wore out two VHS tapes before they released the DVD… destined to work with couples and weddings from a very early age, I’d say. Thanks, Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, and Dermot Mulroney!

Tell us one thing we might not learn about you right away?
I love Japanese botanicals. I’m not very good at taking care of them, but I like to try. I recently enrolled in some yoga classes in an effort to remain active and strengthen my body and mind. I’m also allergic to beer and wine.

What do you love the most about what you do?
I love most that our business is forever changing, and that there are endless opportunities to learn, engage in the community, and try something new. There is no room for complacency in hospitality, and I thoroughly enjoy a challenge!

Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Great Lakes Bay Region, Michigan (Saginaw, Bay City, Midland) – around a 4.5-hour drive from Chicago; I moved to Chicago in 2017.

What's your event gone wrong horror story?
Okay. Notably, this is not an “event” necessarily, but to me, definitely the standout horror story in my history. I directed and produced Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice years ago, and during our press opening night one of our crew members fell during a scene shift and shattered his kneecap. We had to hold the show, call in paramedics…

What made you interested in participating in ILEA?
Thank you to Rachel Fersten, Erik Friend, and Robert Neubert for introducing me! I was a guest of Louise Kelly’s (Backthird Entertainment) at the Greenhouse Loft in January and I fell in love with the atmosphere. I felt very welcomed by a great group of motivated professionals, and I knew Drury Lane had to be a part!
