Meet ILEA Chicago Member – Ethan Carter with The Paramount Group!

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

Who/ what inspired you to go into event planning?

About a century ago, when one would still apply for positions through newspaper classifieds (just before Missed Connections, Births and Obituaries) I saw an opportunity to try out for an account management role with an international trade show organizer. The inspiration within the advert included: International Travel opportunities! Hey presto 16 years later – I’ve moved from Australia to the U.S.A. and still in the events industry.

Tell us one thing we might not learn about you right away?

I’ve traveled 22 countries of the world and 22 of the United States of America. Hoping I can keep matching that at least until 50 each!

What do you love the most about what you do?

There’s always a connection to be made in what I do. Whether it’s connecting an audience with an idea, connecting a professional with a potential partner or, connecting a client to their vision through event execution. If something I do brings a smile – I love it.

Where did you grow up?

A very small little town on the south west side of Australia called Bunbury. A sunny beach town that has regular visits from dolphins, close to the wine belt and some of the best surfing in the country.

What's your event gone wrong horror story?

Back when I began in Hospitality (I was 18 or so) I was required to carry out a 3 tier wedding cake for the couple to do the obligatory first slice. Being a scrawny, nervous waiter trying to do a good job, got all shaky and lost grip of the wedding cake to have it topple in front of my eyes. Fortunately, both mothers were there to catch everything but some roses and we reset the cake to be carried out with the guests unaware of my bungle! You could say nothing has been a horror story since – that one really ‘takes the cake’

What made you interested in participating in ILEA?

Having the opportunity to work with The Paramount Group in Chicago, has opened up many doors to engage with professionals and peers in the industry – and through research, many of the best connections to be made are through ILEA. There are regular meet ups designed to bring members of the community together providing the chance to brainstorm, update on trends and client events plus introduce to potential new partners. So much happens between each of these get-togethers, it’s like a reunion with the ILEA family at each occasion. Great organization, creative professionals, growing and building on more opportunities!
